ACA Health Insurance in Florida

ACA health insurance — also called Obamacare or Marketplace coverage — is major medical insurance sold through HealthCare.gov. Bernard Health Group Inc. helps Florida individuals, families and self-employed clients compare Marketplace plans, enroll on time, and understand what they may be eligible for.

What ACA Marketplace Coverage Includes

Marketplace plans are required to cover a set of essential health benefits: preventive care and annual exams, prescription drugs, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use services, hospital care and pediatric services. Preventive care is covered at no cost to you when you use an in-network provider.

You cannot be denied coverage or charged more because of a pre-existing condition, and plans cannot impose annual or lifetime dollar limits on essential health benefits.

Who Can Enroll in a Florida Marketplace Plan

You generally need to live in Florida, be a U.S. citizen or lawfully present, and not be enrolled in Medicare. Marketplace coverage is available to individuals and families whether or not an employer offers a plan — though an affordable employer offer can affect eligibility for financial help.

If your household income falls below the Florida Medicaid threshold, the Marketplace will route your application to Medicaid instead. That is not a dead end, and we will tell you what happens next.

Open Enrollment and Special Enrollment Periods

Open Enrollment is the annual window when anyone can sign up, typically running from November into mid-January. Outside that window, a qualifying life event opens a Special Enrollment Period — usually 60 days from the event date.

  • Losing job-based coverage or COBRA
  • Aging off a parent's plan at 26
  • Moving to a new service area or ZIP code
  • Getting married or divorced
  • Having a baby, adopting, or placing a child for adoption
  • Losing Medicaid or Florida KidCare eligibility
  • A change in household income that changes eligibility

Premium Tax Credits and Cost-Sharing Reductions

Many Marketplace applicants may qualify for premium tax credits depending on household income, household size, and other eligibility requirements. The credit is calculated from the income estimate you submit, and it is reconciled against your actual income when you file your taxes.

Cost-sharing reductions are a separate benefit that lowers deductibles, copays and out-of-pocket maximums rather than the premium. They are only available on Silver-tier plans, and only to households that qualify under Marketplace rules. Eligibility is determined by the Marketplace and the IRS — the official rules and the eligibility screener are published at HealthCare.gov.

Bronze, Silver, Gold and Catastrophic Plans

Metal tiers do not change what a plan covers — they change how the cost is split between you and the insurer. Bronze plans carry the lowest premiums and the highest costs when you use care. Silver plans sit in the middle and are the only tier eligible for cost-sharing reductions. Gold plans cost more per month and less at the doctor. Catastrophic plans are available only to certain applicants.

For most households the real question is how much care you expect to use, not which tier sounds best. We model a normal year and a bad year for each option.

ACA Coverage for Self-Employed and 1099 Workers

Self-employed clients have income that moves, which makes the income estimate the most important number on the application. You can estimate from business income, self-employment profit, and other household earnings for the coverage year.

If your income changes significantly mid-year, tell us. Updating the estimate with the Marketplace protects you from a larger reconciliation surprise at tax time.

How We Help You Enroll

We handle the parts that cause most people to give up halfway through the application.

  • Review your providers and prescriptions first
  • Build a realistic household income estimate
  • Compare every eligible plan, not a shortlist
  • Submit the application and enrollment on time
  • Confirm your coverage start date and first payment
  • Stay reachable when you need to report a change
